Memory Book, The, By Lorayne, Harry & Lucas, Jerry,
B271-1428, NOW $6.00 SOLD |
Published by Stein & Day, Published in
1974 hardbound, Book measures 6.5 x 9.25 inches, 237
pages,
This is a book review of Harry Lorayne and Jerry
Lucas’ The Memory Book: The Classic Guide to
Improving Your Memory at Work, at School, and at
Play. I’ve written a review of the book because
having a good memory is important in speeches,
conversation subjects, and remembering people’s
name.
You forget a person’s name. You leave important
papers at work. You lock your keys in the car. You
have trouble studying for a test. You can’t remember
a speech so you have to read it. All of these are
common situations that you no longer have to
experience thanks to The Memory Book.
Co-author Harry Lorayne is a magician and card
specialist. His most notable card trick
involves accurately saying a complete deck of cards
in order. How does he do it? He is able to memorize
52 cards in their exact order. Freaky? Definitely
not once you read the powerful memory systems shared
in this book. Both co-authors have demonstrated
their unusual memory feats on television.
Harry Lorayne has performed on television shows by
reciting up to 500 names of audience members. One of
his most remarkable feats involves remembering
13,000 names and telephone numbers from the
Manhattan telephone book! I’m sure anyone can learn
from someone with that skill.
Having studied memory systems for decades, Harry has
developed efficient and effective memory techniques
that are applicable to our everyday lives so you no
longer have to kick yourself when forgetting
something. There is a specific technique in this
book for remembering people’s names, long digits
like telephone numbers, speeches, appointments,
foreign languages, sequences of information, and
many more common situations where a good memory is
useful – this includes eliminating absent
mindedness!
Other specific techniques taught and demonstrated in
the book are for speed reading, knowing the day of
any date within the current year, remembering music,
historical dates, and more. If the area you are
interested in for improving your memory is not
discussed, you’ll find the systems can be applied to
remembering almost anything. By practicing the
memory techniques a little and going through the
simple given exercises, you’ll have the ability to
remember almost anything within reason.
When co-author Jerry Lucas was a child, he developed
his own patterns of memory. During college he read
one of Harry Lorayne’s memory books and blendedthe techniques into his own; mixing and matching the
memory techniques where appropriate. At college he
was able to study one-quarter of the time that his
fellow students spent studying for an exam. Not only
was he able to study more efficiently, but it was
more effective because he received top grades.
Memory is certainly a case of being more productive,
efficient, and successful. The ones who practice the
hardest aren’t always the winners.
Later on in life, Jerry Lucas played professional
basketball for the New York Knicks. Around that time
he was able to meet up with Harry Lorayne for a
meeting that lasted a whopping 18 hours. A lot of
ideas in The Memory Book are from that meeting. At
the start of each chapter, parts of the dialog from
Jerry and Harry’s meeting is included, which makes
for an interesting anecdote. For me, the funniest
part involved one of Jerry’s basketball teammates
who took off his long pants during warm up for a
basketball game. After taking them off, people
started laughing at him which made him realize he
was wearing absolutely nothing below! Maybe your
memory isn’t that bad, but the systems shared in
this book will definitely help you.
I’m not someone who regards himself as having a good
memory. Like many people, I think of myself to have
a poor memory. However, I started reading the book
and came across my first exercise in chapter two.
Each memory principle has a worked example so that
you can practice the technique and learn about it at
the same time. The book is filled with worked
examples for your benefit. I did the first exercise
and couldn’t believe it! I remembered 10 completely
random things in perfect order and was effortlessly
able to recall this list in perfect order the
following day. If that wasn’t enough, I could easily
recite the 10 things backwards!
I was able to do this by simply reading and
following the simple and step-by-step instructions
given. It was like discovering this hidden potential
within myself that I never knew about. Harry and
Jerry believe any person can improve their memory.
That means you!
The major memory systems used are linking and
phonetics, while others include peg words,
substitutes, and keywords. One downside to
phonetics, which is an integral part of most memory
techniques shared in The Memory Book, is the time
required to get started with the system. It needn’t
be a second nature process for you to benefit from
the system, though it probably should be for things
you don’t see on paper the things you don’t have
time to think about. However, it’s like an
investment where you put a little extra effort in at
the beginning to get a bigger return in the form of
quick memorization that sticks.
The book doesn’t go into much depth as to why we
remember, which may or may not be appealing to you.
However, you are able to learn why the techniques
work and at the same time you aren’t flooded with
information that isn’t very useful for your daily
living. The book is slightly smaller than the size
of my palm at a little over 200 pages. In it are a
lot of samples demonstrating the techniques making
it a good read.
Many of today’s memory books and memory courses are
based off of the powerful techniques shared in this
book as it is a must-read in the memory world.
Whether you want to memorize 52 cards in a row to
impress your friends or not, you’re bound to find
many useful applications of the memory systems.
By spending a few hours reading the book and
practicing the techniques, you’ll save yourself
countless hours of wasted productivity, frustration,
and annoyances of not remembering things. The
systems are reliable and you can count on them to
work. Time magazine has called it a never-fail
system

| Trade Shows An Inside Insight
B151-1453 NOW $8.00 |
|
compiled by Francis Marshall |
Find out if trade shows are for you! Except for Television
specials, no aspect of professional magic is as rewarding as
Trade Show work. The big traveling illusion shows have huge
expenses, and a tendency to use up the territory. The
individual Trade Show magician can go on forever--witness
Eddie Tullock--as long as he keeps getting better and better
and attracts continuous important clients. We don't really
suggest that every magician try to be a Trade Show
performer. We do suggest that every magician owes it to
himself to know as much as he can about all ways to make a
living out of the magic he does. For a few dollars Trade
Shows gives you a view of this kind of work you can get in
no other way. Experts have helped to put this book
together--people who know Trade Show work forward and
backward. The information in it is a must if you seriously
intend to approach this field. And if you haven't the
slightest intention of becoming a trade show performer--you
will still marvel at the inside insights of trade show work
now in print. It makes great conversation material, and puts
you in an advisory position with fellow magicians. Trade
Show work is demanding, exciting, rewarding, reputation
building, educational, inspirational, and contributory to
personal growth. Contents of Trade Shows: Dick Stoner at
Work, Dear Abbey, How Much Do I Charge For a Trade Show?,
Trade Shows Now and Where They are Headed, Snodell on Trade
Shows, Trade Show Scenes, An Inside Look at a Trade Show
Survey, Mike Rogers on Trade Shows, Dick Swandby--Trade Show
Expert--Surveys the Situation, Exhibit Performance Can Be
Measured, How to Use
Attention Getting Techniques, Review of a Trade Show Biggie,
Comments on Trade Shows By Lorayne, Tom and Liza Tucker and
ESP Inc., Nothing Succeeds Like Success, Willy Wonka,
Attracting the Crowd, Eddie Tullock Style, Del Ray and the
Hospitality Suites, Trade Shows, a Definite Sales Tool, What
Went Before, Fabulous World of Trade Shows, Profile of a

Putting Magic Into The Trade Exhibit. Note to the "local"
magician: As a performer, a magician can be called upon to
put together a sales meeting, a small promotion, a local
"trade show", or any other commercial venture in his own
town. Be ready for such a call. The material in Trade Shows
is just as valid on a small scale as it is for the big
exhibitions. Study this book and be ready to speak with
confidence and know how to companies who might contact you.

A lively and interesting, compelling
collection of little known ideas, often referred to as
"betchas". Bet you a drink you can't do so and so like
pushing a quarter through a dime sized hole. You may know
that one but there are dozens here that are fresh and
different, and will get your spectators really involved with
your challenges. Great for bars, lunch table, offices,
coffee break, parties, hospitality suites, young peoples
affairs, etc. Although you introduce them as an impromptu
stunt, you actually have a set program in mind for best
results. These amusing little gags can make you the life of
the party or gathering - they avoid the dull moments.

Marlo Without Tears, By Racherbaumer, Jon,
B271-1421
, NOW $30.00 |
Published by Korem, Published in 1983
First Edition Hardbound, Book measures 7.25 x 10.25
inches, 317 pages,
Edward Marlo is a phenomenon who has unquestionably
made an indelible mark in the world of magic. In the
past forty years he has published numerous
innovative and influential books, plus an impressive
number of articles for various magazines. The
Complete Marlo Bibliography is still incomplete, but
at last count there are over 1500 items, covering
3200 pages of text, and over 57 books! Over and
above this remarkable prolificacy is the consistent
superiority of the material itself. And all of it
chronicles his long, ardent, and fastidious love
affair with the pasteboards. Marlo Without Tears is
another fascinating chapter in the Marlovian quest
for the Real Work.
Jon Racherbaumer, in his own words, is "a
conscientious dilettante, who strives to discover
useful and lasting material and then translate it
into readable books and articles." He is the author
of eighteen books and manuscripts, including the
best-selling CARD FINESSE and THE ASCANIO SPREAD. He
is also the controversial and innovative publisher
of Hierophant, Kabbala, and Sticks & Stones,
magazines that continue to inform and stimulate the
cognoscenti. He has also contributed over 100 items
to various magic magazines.
Of Marlo he has said, "It's been my goal to infuse
my writings with the same kind of enthusiasm and
esprit evoked by Marlo's actual performances to
somehow show Marlo's marvelous thinking, while
giving a vicarious sense of life to the dead
reckoning of dry, technical prose."

Mr. Electric Unplugged B151-1454 NOW $40.00 |
| By Marvyn Roy |
Marvyn Roy – Unplugged.
This book is unlike any of
our previous history books. Instead of digging through old
newspapers and magazines and writing about vaudeville
theaters and music halls, this story is told by the man who
lived it. During the fifties, sixties, seventies and
eighties, there was not a more successful magical team than
Marvyn Roy and Carol. Their act, Mr. Electric, appeared at
Radio City Music Hall, the London Palladium, The Latin
Quarter, Gorki Park in Moscow, on the Ed Sullivan Show, The
Hollywood Palace and everywhere in between. Hotels, ice
shows, floor shows, night clubs, theatres, arenas and
amusement parks, they did it all. With their acclaimed light
bulb act, and later as the Diamond Illusionist, they
traveled for years with the Liberace show. Now Marvyn has
put his entire magical life into book form. Beginning with
his early success as Marvyn the Silk Merchant and winning
awards as a teenager at the PCAM conventions, to the time he
spent working behind the counter at Floyd Thayer’s Studio,
to the development of his world famous act and subsequent
climb to the highest rung of the show business ladder. It is
a story that only Marvyn could tell and you will recognize
many familiar faces along the way.
Anyone who ever dreamed of being a famous magician, can
now live that dream through the eyes and words of Marvyn Roy .
Mr. Electric – Unplugged contains 300 pages featuring more
than 150 photographs and is hardbound with a beautiful dust
jacket.
